Captured during a schistosomiasis control study in Puerto Rico, these four Marisa cornuarietis snails were shown atop a banana leaf. This species is bred as a biological competitor to Biomphalaria glabrata, formerly Australorbis glabratus, the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, the causative agent of human schistosomiasis. Because M. cornuarietis is not a host for S. mansoni, its introduction helps suppress B. glabrata populations, and thereby, reduce transmission of schistosomiasis.
