Under a magnification of 70,000X, these two scanning electron micrographs (SEM) illustrate the effects of crystalline pepsin on vaccinia virions, demonstrating that the central body is not an artifact. The specimens were gold-shadowed, emphasizing the three-dimensional structure of the virus particles. The top image shows particle appearance before pepsin treatment, while the lower image shows virions following exposure to pepsin.
