Caption:
This historic June 1953 image, depicted a young, 7-year-old boy, who was lying in a bed, in a clinical setting, flanked by a nurse to his left, and his mother seated on the right. The boy had been bitten by what had turned out to be a rabid Florida yellow bat, Dasypterus floridanus, which had been killed while attacking the boy near Tampa. This was the first documented case of rabies being transferred by an infected bat in the United States.
