Caption:
This was a photograph captured in Puerto Rico, which depicted an anterior view of the head and upper body of a young child, who had presented to the clinical setting with a round cutaneous scalp lesion, and accompanying overlying alopecia. The lesion was diagnosed as a case of ringworm, or tinea capitis, caused by the dermatophytic fungal organism, Trichophyton gallinae, which only rarely causes ringworm in human beings. See PHIL 28510, for a superior view of this child’s scalp lesion.
