This photograph depicted what is referred to as a two-tube nutritional study, which was arranged to test for an organism’s thiamine requirement in order to thrive. In this case, two strains of the fungal organism, Trichophyton tonsurans were being tested. The tube on the left of each pair (1a and 2a), included casein that was added to the growth medium, while the tube on the right of each pair (1b and 2b), included casein and thiamin, or vitamin B1. Though there was minimal growth in the casein-only tubes, both stains grew significantly in the tubes containing thiamine as well.
