This photomicrograph of a human colon tissue specimen, highlighted some of the histopathology exhibited in a case of colonic schistosomiasis, caused by a trematodal parasite from the genus Schistosoma. In the center you see a cross-section of an adult Schistosoma worm within a vessel in the colon wall, surrounded by an inflammatory infiltrate, fibrotic changes, and overall tissue remodeling, with a loss of the normal hepatic cytoarchitecture.
