This ancient Egyptian pictographic stone carving, entitled “Stele for Ruma,” bears the inscription, “Ofrende til den Syriske Gudinde Astarte” and “Manden har lidt af børnelammelse,” which translate to “Offering to the Syrian goddess Astarte” and “The man has suffered from infantile paralysis.” The paralytic condition is thought to represent an early case of poliomyelitis.
