Caption:
This photograph shows a close frontal view of a Petri dish culture plate containing blood agar inoculated with an unspecified anaerobic bacterium to assess nitrate reductase activity. A small paper disk impregnated with potassium nitrate was placed on the agar surface. Reduction of nitrate (NO3-) to nitrite (NO2-) produces a red color change; here, a dark red zone surrounding the disk indicates a positive reaction.
