This image depicts a centrifugation vial into which fluids containing various densities of sucrose had been layered, with the most dense layer at the bottom, and the least dense layer the top. A sample fluid containing the rabies virus was carefully layered at the surface, The process of centrifugation is then performed, allowing the rabies virus to diffuse through the varying densities of sucrose, coming to rest at a point dependent upon its own sedimentation coefficient.
