This photomicrograph highlighted some of the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by the fungal organism, Trichophyton mentagrophytes. This was a close view of the edge of an ascocarp, or cleistothecium, containing numerous asci, each of which in turn, contained the organism’s reproductive cells known as ascospores. Note the spiral shaped interwoven hyphae comprising the edge of the ascocarp, known as the peridium.
