At 100X magnification, this photomicrograph of an abscess sample highlights histopathologic changes associated with actinomycosis, a bacterial infection caused by Gram-positive organisms of the genus Actinomyces. Note the crushed sulfur granule in the center, surrounded by a leukocytic infiltrate, within which numerous chains of rod-shaped bacteria are visible.
