Caption:
This photomicrograph of a trichrome-stained, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-fixed stool specimen reveals a narrow, diamond-shaped Charcot-Leyden crystal that stains a dark wine-red color. Charcot-Leyden crystals result from the breakdown of eosinophils and may be found in the feces and sputum of individuals with tissue-invading parasitic infections or various allergic reactions.
