This photomicrograph revealed the presence of the bacterium, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, formerly Bacillus thetaiotaomicron, which had been cultivated on blood agar, for a 48 hour incubation period. Members of the genus Bacteroides are anaerobic, Gram-negative bacteria found mainly in the intestine as normal flora. However, it can become opportunistic under predisposing conditions including immunosuppression, tissue damage, and malignancy.
