This historic image, captured in 1963 in the port city of Georgetown, Guiana (now the Co-operative Republic of Guyana), was taken during the country’s polio vaccination campaign. It shows four Communicable Disease Center (CDC) epidemiologists embarking by boat en route to a waiting Grumman seaplane, which would transport them to interior regions of the country. The photograph was taken during the country’s polio epidemic that year.
