This historic image, captured in September 1963, depicts two men loading polio vaccine onto an Air National Guard aircraft at the Birmingham, Alabama airport. At left is Alabama State Epidemiologist Dr. W.H.Y. Smith, and at right is Walker County Health Department Commissioner Dr. Sam Snoddy. The scene was captured during a polio vaccination campaign of the early 1960s.
