This historic image, captured in 1960 during the Rhode Island polio epidemic, depicts Dr. Oren examining a young girl while her mother sits at right holding another child. This case was identified as the first poliomyelitis case of the 1960 Rhode Island epidemic. Residual kyphoscoliosis is visible in the girl’s back, a sequela of the disease.
