Captured during a San Francisco, California plague field study, this historic image depicted a large ship that was docking at the Port of San Francisco Harbor. Note the rat guards that prevented rats from scurrying up the hawsers, and thereby, gain access to the ship’s interior. This ship would undergo an inspection that would check for the presence of plague infected rodents and their ectoparasites.
