Caption:
Under an undisclosed magnification this transmission electron micrograph (TEM) revealed some of the morphologic ultrastructure exhibited by the mouse hepatitis virus (MHV), a member of a group of coronaviruses that affect rodents. You are able to see the spiked proteins projecting from the viral envelope of each virion, forming a spiked corona surrounding the periphery of each viral particle. This MHV was associated with a case of lethal enteritis, and was harvested from one of the three mice depicted in PHIL 14637. MHV was formerly known as the lethal intestinal virus of infant mice (LIVIM).
