Caption:
This historic image from 1960, was captured during a public health related United States Medical Mission to Africa, and depicted a street scene that showed a Bantu native in the process of building a fire in a rundown housing district in this area of Johannesburg, South Africa, that was to be demolished and replaced by updated housing structures, like those depicted in PHIL 30071. One of the most complicated steps in this renovation project, was the migration of all the inhabitants of this sector into transient housing structures.
