Caption:
This 1976 photograph was captured during an investigation of hepatitis at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, located in South Dakota. The viral disease was thought to have been spread from person to person at school, however, there was no major investigative breakthrough. This image depicted a scene taking place inside a school’s administrative offices, and showed a school administrator, shaking hands with one of the public health investigators during this epidemiologic study.
