This image consists of a photomicrographic montage of six panels showing viral pocks formed on the surface of chorioallantoic membranes (CAM) from embryonated hen eggs, each inoculated with a different virus and incubated for 72 hours at 35°C. Panel A shows variola major virus; B, whitepox virus (strain 64–7275); C, pigeonpox virus; D, rabbitpox virus; E, vaccinia virus (VACV); and F, cowpox virus (CPXV). Note the morphologic similarities and differences among the viral pocks following incubation.
