This historic image shows the right hand of a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) laboratory technician holding a needle-tipped syringe stabilized with a rubber stopper as it penetrates the top of a chicken egg for inoculation. A beaker at left contains a 70% alcohol solution in which gauze pads are soaking, one of which was used to sterilize the egg’s exterior surface.
