Caption:
Created in 1970, this photograph depicts an anterior view of an infant exhibiting signs consistent with kwashiorkor, a condition caused by dietary protein deficiency, as well as features suggestive of vitamin B deficiency. Clinical findings of kwashiorkor may include hair changes such as the “flag sign”, edema, impaired growth, and weight loss. Angular stomatitis is also visible, indicative of an accompanying vitamin B deficiency. See PHIL 6188 for the appearance of this child following treatment.
