This historic photograph documents the last reported case of smallpox in Uttar Pradesh, India. The patient, a 7-month-old female, developed rash onset on March 8, 1975; the case was detected on March 12, 1975, and she died from the infection on March 16, 1975. This image was taken approximately 2 hours after death. The case represents severe hemorrhagic smallpox, characterized by bleeding into maculopapular lesions.
