Created on December 27, 2024, this image depicts a close ventral view of the head region of a third-instar larva of the New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (family Calliphoridae). The larva was collected from a 6-month-old bovine in the remote Q’eqchi’ Maya village of Crique Sarco, Toledo District, Belize. The reemergence of C. hominivorax in Belize was first detected in Crique Sarco in December 2024. Believed to have spread from neighboring areas of Guatemala, the outbreak rapidly expanded, resulting in hundreds of cases across multiple districts and affecting both livestock and domestic animals. The specimen was collected by Dr. Roxanna Alvarez, Director of Animal Health and Managing Director of the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), and provided to the photographer, Prof. Gary D. Alpert, PhD, of Northern Arizona University, by Prof. John Grieco, PhD, of the University of Notre Dame Department of Biological Sciences.
