Caption:
This image depicts a dorsal view of an adult Colorado bed bug, Hesperocimex coloradensis. A member of the family Cimicidae, this live specimen was collected by conservationist, Rick Moore, in June 2026 from material gathered from the nest of a western bluebird, Sialia mexicana, after the young had fledged. The nest was located in Picture Canyon, Flagstaff, Arizona. Hesperocimex coloradensis feeds on the blood of purple martins, woodpeckers, owls, and other birds. Unlike the common bed bug, it exhibits a mixture of very short hairs (setae) and scattered, longer hairs along the margins of its body.
