This image depicts a dorsal view of an adult male brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, collected from a dog at a veterinary clinic in Flagstaff, Arizona. This tick species can transmit the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii, the causative agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), to both humans and dogs. It can also transmit the bacterium Ehrlichia canis, the cause of canine ehrlichiosis, and the protozoa Babesia canis and Babesia gibsoni, both of which cause canine babesiosis. In addition, it may transmit Bartonella spp. bacteria to dogs, resulting in canine bartonellosis. Unlike most tick species, R. sanguineus can complete its entire life cycle indoors, leading to severe household and kennel infestations.
