Captured on January 18, 1956, this historic photograph shows a bacteriology training session in progress inside one of the Communicable Disease Center (CDC) Chamblee Campus' converted Civil Defense buildings. The site occupied the former Lawson General Hospital. In 1946, the Office of Malaria Control in War Areas (MCWA) was reorganized as the CDC, which subsequently acquired much of the former Lawson General Hospital complex for its headquarters and laboratories. Standing in the center is microbiologist William Bailey Cherry, PhD, who is conducting the training course.
