Captured in 1978, this historic photograph shows two Centers for Disease Control (CDC) scientists working side by side within the Maximum Containment Lab (MCL) Suit Laboratory, where they are performing a biochemical separation of viral proteins. Special Pathogens Branch (SPB) virologist Karl M. Johnson, MD, is seated in the background, while SPB pathologist James V. Lange, PhD, is seated in the foreground. Both scientists are wearing positive-pressure, airtight protective suits supplied with breathable air through coiled hoses attached to their suits.
