Captured in 1978, this historic photograph shows Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Special Pathogens Branch (SPB) virologist Karl M. Johnson, MD, working inside the Maximum Containment Lab (MCL) Suit Laboratory while wearing a positive-pressure, airtight protective suit supplied with breathable air through the attached coiled hose. Dr. Johnson is standing before a sealed animal containment enclosure while tending to unidentified laboratory animals housed inside.
