Captured in November 1974, this historic photograph shows a nine-banded armadillo, Dasypus novemcinctus, and laboratory mice, Mus musculus, two animal models used in experimental inoculation studies involving Mycobacterium leprae, the bacterium that causes leprosy. The image was associated with the work of Centers for Disease Control (CDC) microbiologist Charles C. Shepard, MD, whose development of the mouse-footpad model contributed significantly to experimental leprosy research.
