Captured on May 17, 1983, this historic photograph shows U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Margaret M. Heckler touring the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). At this point during her visit, Secretary Heckler had entered an elevator accompanied by CDC Director William H. Foege, MD, MPH, and other unidentified staff members. As HHS Secretary, Heckler headed the Cabinet-level department under which CDC operated.
