Captured in 1960, this historic photograph depicts a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) laboratory technician using a rotary microtome equipped with a viewing microscope. The microtome enabled the technician to cut very thin sections of prepared tissue specimens for subsequent examination under a microscope.
