This historic portrait depicts Richard J. O’Brien, MD, a physician and epidemiologist who served as an officer with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) during the 1970s. Dr. O’Brien went on to have a distinguished career at CDC, where his work focused on tuberculosis epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, drug resistance, and control, including service with the agency’s Division of Tuberculosis Control and later Division of Tuberculosis Elimination.
