This 1975 portrait depicted physician and epidemiologist Harold S. “Hal” Margolis, MD, an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Dr. Margolis began his CDC career with an assignment in Alaska and subsequently became a leading authority on viral hepatitis. During his 34-year career with CDC, he served for more than two decades as director of the agency’s Hepatitis Branch and contributed to national recommendations for the prevention and control of viral hepatitis. Later in his career, he served as chief of CDC’s Dengue Branch in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from 2010 to 2015.
