This photograph depicts a lateral view of a patient’s right hand and wrist, highlighting pronounced swelling associated with gonococcal arthritis resulting from disseminated Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection. Although N. gonorrhoeae primarily infects mucosal sites, including the genital tract, rectum, and pharynx, the bacterium can disseminate through the bloodstream and involve other parts of the body. This condition, known as disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI), can involve the joints and result in gonococcal arthritis.
