This photograph depicts a female patient in the lithotomy position, showing a primary syphilitic chancre on the left buttock, just lateral to the anus. Dark-field examination of material from the lesion yielded a positive result, supporting the diagnosis. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum.
