Caption:
This image depicts portions of four HELF (human embryonic lung fibroblast) cell-culture plates, each inoculated with a different strain of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis virus. The four strains, designated J6 70-71, R6, 435, and 471, produced visible plaques after four days of incubation at 36°C. Each culture was overlaid with minimum essential medium (MEM) containing 1.5% SeaPlaque agarose and 2% fetal calf serum (FCS). The semisolid overlay restricted viral spread, allowing each infectious particle to produce a localized zone of infected or destroyed cells. The cultures were stained with crystal violet, which enhanced the contrast between the stained cell monolayers and the unstained plaques.
