This image depicts a close view of a 29-year old female patient’s perineum, which had been infected by the Gram-negative bacterium, Haemophilus ducreyi, causing the disease chancroid, evidenced by the multiple perineal lesions. In women, the most common locations of chancroidal ulcers are the labia majora, labia minora, perianal area, and inner thighs. In about 50% of the patients with chancroid, the infection spreads to the lymph nodes in the groin.
