Caption:
Under a magnification of 160X, this photomicrograph reveals some of the histopathologic changes uncovered in a hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) stained lung tissue specimen, which was extracted from a patient who had succumbed to a fatal case of human plague. Note the presence of moderate suppurative pneumonia, including many polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN), capillary engorgement, and intra-alveolar debris, all indicative of an acute infection.
