Caption:
This hematoxylin-eosin (H&E)-stained photomicrograph reveals the histopathologic changes in cervicovaginal tissue sample harvested during an autopsy, that was the result of a case of toxic shock syndrome (TSS), which was attributed to a Gram-positive, Staphylococcus aureus bacterial infection. The cocci organisms can be seen confined to the mucosal surface. Also visible, are the ulcerative, inflammatory, and degenerative changes extending from the cervical mucosa inward.
