This photomicrograph reveals the histopathologic changes in a lung tissue specimen extracted during an autopsy, which had been the result of a fatal case of toxic shock syndrome (TSS). Visible histopathologic changes included mild hyaline membrane formation, epithelial sloughing, and mild inflammation evidenced by the presence of a fluid, and white blood cell, polymorphonuclear (PMN) infiltrate.
