Caption:
This diagram depicts the various lifecycle stages through which the intestinal nematode, Trichinella spiralis passes, as it matures, from an egg to its adult form. Trichinellosis is acquired by ingesting meat containing cysts, or encysted larvae, of Trichinella spp. organisms. After exposure to gastric acid and pepsin, the larvae are released from the cysts, invading the small bowel mucosa where they develop into adult worms.
