This image depicts an intravaginal colposcopic view of a female patient, revealing a copious purulent discharge emanating from the cervical os, due to a Trichomonas vaginalis infection, or trichomonas vaginitis. T. vaginalis, a flagellate, is the most common pathogenic protozoan of humans in industrialized countries. This protozoan resides in the female lower genital tract, and the male urethra and prostate, where it replicates by binary fission.
