Caption:
This 2003 photograph depicts a penned cow that had been infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), also referred to as mad cow disease. Note that it had isolated itself in a wet area of the pen. Behavioral changes in temperament, including nervousness or aggression, abnormal posture, incoordination and difficulty in rising, decreased milk production, and/or loss of weight, despite continued appetite, are followed by death in cattle affected by BSE.
