This 1981 photograph depicted medical epidemiologist, Pierre Claquin, MD, BAC, in the process of extracting a blood sample from an Alabama resident, who had been living near a possibly contaminated stream. In the early 1980’s, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted a complete health study of residents in an Alabama neighborhood to determine the dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) levels among its citizens. Health concerns arose when DDT contaminated fish were discovered in a nearby stream.
