In this 1980 photograph depicted former Centers for Disease Control (CDC) arbovirologist and entomologist, Dr. William Daniel “Dan” Sudia, as he was using a mechanical hand-held aspirator, allowing him to collect mosquitoes that had landed within a chicken coop. Agriculturally important livestock including chickens, horses, and cattle, are often victims of vectoral pest infestations. Mosquitoes are a prime vector for the transmission of zoonotic diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans. This image was part of a series, used in the training of vector collection technicians, in the proper methods that are implemented when processing medically important arthropods for arbovirus isolation, identification, and analysis, in order to determine their vector potentials.
