Caption:
This illustration depicts a dorsal view of three ticks, which included from left to right, a male and female hard tick of the family Ixodidae, and an example of a soft tick, an Argasidae family member on the right. Note that a hard integument, and the presence of a dorsal shield, or scutum, characterizes hard ticks, while on the other hand, soft ticks receive their name from the fact that their body covering is relatively soft, and a dorsal shield or scutum is absent.
