This 2004 photograph is the eighth in a series of eighteen images depicting the paraphernalia, and steps to be followed, when a trained phlebotomist obtains a blood sample, by way of a venipuncture, using the contents of a Vacutainer® kit.
- The hands of this phlebotomist were in the process of assembling a venipuncture needle and canister, which would be used to create a port through which blood could then be drawn from a patient’s antecubital arm vein. Just prior to performing the venipuncture, the needle cover was being removed, exposing the metallic needle inside. The technician should always observe universal safety precautions, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Keep the work areas clean, and well organized.
