This photograph, taken in 1975, during the Rhodesian, now Zimbabwean, epidemiologic investigation that occurred after the South African Marburg outbreak. The male hitchhiker, referred to as Case #1, sat near this hole in a road bank, where he was either bitten, or stung by an unknown vector. Several health investigators trapped, and tested animals and insects in this area. All tests came back negative for the Marburg virus, and no such vector was ever identified, as being responsible for initiating the outbreak.
